Do you over rely on the SEO Yoast Plugin?

Relying solely on Yoast SEO as your online “SEO strategy” is a gross over simplification

Don’t put all your marketing eggs into the Facebook basket. Particularly with the recent Facebook newsfeed algorithm change which is potentially the end to organic reach for Facebook business pages. The reality is that organic search engine traffic converts 9-percent better than social media traffic. But, in order to achieve this for your own business website, you need to apply some genuine and reliable SEO actions that actually work.

Google makes on average 500-600 algorithm tweaks a year and changes such as the recent Snippet Length Increase late in November 2017, through to more commonly known Hummingbird, Panda, Possum, Pigeon and Penguin search algorithm updates to fine tune their search results ensuring the best user experience matching the ideal search results to the user’s search query.

Did you know? Starting in July 2018, Google will finally use mobile page speed as a ranking factor in their mobile search results. Google is calling this the “Speed Update” and it will impact those web pages that deliver the slowest experience to users.

Keeping up with and understanding Google’s best practice methodologies, along with other search engines, is actually a complex and time-consuming task, which is why the role of a SEO specialist exists.

An SEO expert will dedicate themselves to learning, testing, measuring and optimising business websites with current white-hat Search Engine Optimisation strategies. They will be familiar with Google Webmaster recommendations, search engine tools provided such as Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, analytics and tracking tools such as Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager, as well as third-party enterprise SEO tools such as WebCEO, AHREFs, WooRank, SEMRush and others, and of course various SEO plugins dependant on the CMS (Content Management System) website platform such as the All-in-One SEO pack and SEO Yoast plugin on the world’s most popular website design platform WordPress (25%-plus of all websites globally use WordPress).

The Yoast SEO plugin is the most popular go-to SEO tool since 2008 for bloggers and small business owners using the WordPress platform. One little green light from the Yoast SEO page analysis scan and you’re good to go with SEO right? Or not… It’s not that I want to roast Yoast, or in fact any and all of the multitude of currently available SEO tools, programs, plugins and reports. I want you to understand and consider using the available SEO tools in perspective, to stand back and create a Zen like SEO balance for your online presence through using multiple SEO applications to determine patterns and work to the strengths of each program and to negate the negatives which each program also has.

As a website beginner you may not have the capability to do this, which is where our affordable local SEO services from Toby Creative provides the solution and assistance you require.

Yoast SEO offers a free WordPress plugin as well as premium SEO plugin options for your website

Consider that Yoast SEO is really a very handy simple website plugin for beginner webmasters organising and shaping their webpage content SEO using a simplified heuristic, or set of rules, to determine the key elements of structure that the website and in particular the webpage, would ideally contain. It doesn’t actually fix technical SEO issues such as coding issues or resolve many page speed issues. It doesn’t perform link building and local directory submissions. It doesn’t do keyword research. It doesn’t provide grammar analysis. It doesn’t provide synergistic content ideas but provides a rough indicator of optimisation for a single keyword assigned to the page… where multiple keywords may actually thrive driving traffic simultaneously but now put at risk by an over simplification by the inexperienced. There are many good things that Yoast does, and which we rely upon as they are effective and simple including advanced XML sitemap functionality, control over site breadcrumbs, setting canonical URLs to avoid duplicate content, though it doesn’t resolve duplicate content, and provides easy ways to implement your simple meta data such as the page title and description.

Setting the focus keywords within Yoast SEO plugin should not just be guessed. The last thing you want is to create content for a keyword you’ll never rank for. So, you need to know what it is that people are searching (keyword research) and whether your website is capable of ranking for it (keyword competition). A structured keyword research strategy will greatly improve your chances of getting listed on page one of the SERPs and should be done before writing content.

Relying solely on Yoast as your online “SEO strategy” is a gross over simplification of complacency.

If Yoast is the most popular SEO plugin, and everyone is using it, as are your competitors, are you bringing something different to the party to differentiate your online marketing and obtain better SEO results and placement within the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) for your brand? Some SEO tools can create ‘false positives’, or blind the user to thinking that they are doing the right thing when actually they are not… something which only experience in the SEO field and with Yoast and other plugins can provide.

As with any profession, there are certain tools that are considered staples. We might all have a flat-head screwdriver in our toolbox, but that does not mean it should be used as a chisel, or vice-versa. Yoast is such a tool, useful and in some ways powerful but when misused or mistaken it can be damaging and cumbersome.
